Frequently asked questions

If you’ve never hired a musician for an event, or if you’re wondering how my services are different from other musicians, I’ve provided a Frequently Asked Questions from years of playing for all kinds of events over 30 years.

What is the booking process like?

Start with the Contact page and send me a note indicating what you’re looking for. Depending on your event type or setting, the process can include more formal artifacts such as contracts and invoices for country clubs, email or text exchanges for established clients needing booking renewal for an ongoing event, such as a church service or playing at a cocktail hour in a restaurant.

How does your pricing work?

Pricing varies depending on the type of event, total time involved, rehearsal requirements, travel distance, and technical needs. Private events and corporate engagements are typically billed hourly, while weddings and church services often require customized pricing based on rehearsal and service details. I’m happy to discuss your specific needs and provide a clear quote.

How far do you travel from Raleigh?

I play mainly in the triangle area, but I have played as far away as Monroe, NC, and Myrtle Beach SC. Arrangements for travel reimbursement or overnight stays can be negotiated provided the schedule allows.

Do you bring your own keyboard and sound equipment?

Yes. I have an 88-key Yamaha P-90 keyboard, keyboard stand, bench, music stand, and stereo amplifier. It takes me about 30 minutes to set it up and be ready to go. Of course, I love playing on a well-maintained acoustic piano if you have one for me to use!

Can you play outdoors?

Yes. I’ve played on decks, in back yards, courtyards, and even a barn!

What happens if you can’t make an appearance at a scheduled engagement?

In over twenty years of playing the piano, there was only one instance when I had to miss a scheduled playing date at the last minute. I had dislocated my shoulder and couldn’t play. However, Over the years, I’ve built relationships with skilled performers across the Triangle and I’m confident I will be able to find a suitable replacement to meet the obligations of the engagement.

What styles of music do you play?

My typical style is songs from the Great American Songbook. These include songs that people like Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald might have sung. Songs by Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, and Cole Porter are staples in my repertoire, but you’ll also hear songs from Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, and Ed Sheeran as well. You can view a list of my set lists here, though the set lists evolve over time.

I am also deeply familiar with traditional gospel hymns and I have played hymns and contemporary worship songs for family and church events to the delight of those who love those songs and share deep faith and affection for the songs they grew up with in church.

Do you take song requests?

Yes, I know a lot of tunes, and my iPad knows even more. I may not know the song you’re looking for, but I may be able to play one like it or another one by the same artist or genre. No, I don’t do Free Bird.

Can you bring additional musicians?

I love playing with other musicians. Yes, I run in a rich network of talented musicians. Let’s discuss what you have in mind!

How long have you been performing professionally?

I was 17 when I was hired to play for a flower show. I think I knew Misty and a few other tunes, but I worked hard to familiarize myself with other songs so I could fill the two hours. I may have repeated the set list a few times that day!
